Rebellion Talks: The Strange & Tragic Tale of Robert Baldwin
History · Museum · Talks
About this event
Listen to the story of Robert Baldwin, one of the strangest and most pivotal figures in Canadian history. Not everyone who demanded change believed in violence. One of the leading champions of Canadian democracy refused to take up arms and join the rebels. Baldwin's summer home was located where the museum is today. Investigate the role Baldwin played in trying to find a peaceful solution to the rebellion crisis, how he eventually accomplished what Mackenzie never did, and the bizarre twist to his tragic love story. From October 2026 to April 2027, historian Adam Bunch brings Toronto’s history to life in a series of talks exploring the Upper Canada Rebellion and its lasting impact on the city. From spies and taverns to political reform, rural rebels and the Patriot War, each talk reveals a different story connected to the museum where it takes place.
