About this event
Discover a lesser-known chapter of Canadian history celebrating democracy and solidarity at a special documentary screening. In 1991, approximately 80 young Canadians and Americans of Ukrainian descent, including many participants from Toronto, travelled to Ukraine to support its independence movement ahead of the December 1 referendum. Through rare archival footage and firsthand accounts, the documentary explores Canadian civic engagement, international solidarity and the power of individuals to advance democracy. On December 2, 1991, Canada became the first Western country to recognize Ukraine's independence. Thirty-five years later, the film highlights Toronto's connections to global history as Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty. Join us on November 18 for a story of courage and civic responsibility, followed by a discussion and Q&A with the filmmakers.
